Share folders Using Samba

KDE Linux allows sharing the contents of folders on your system with other computers on the same network, using the Samba/SMB protocol.

One-time setup

  1. Launch Dolphin.
  2. Right-click on the folder you want to share, choose Properties in the menu.
  3. Click the Share tab in the window that appears.
  4. If you see a message telling you that the Samba service needs to be enabled, click the ✓ Enable the Samba Service button, and follow all remaining steps in the setup wizard.

Sharing the folder

  1. Click the checkbox labeled Share this folder with other computers on the local network.
  2. Change the level of access using the combobox labeled Everyone: the default level is Read Only, but you can also choose Full Control (read/write) or No Access.

Accessing shared folders from another computer

If the other computer runs KDE Linux (or runs KDE Plasma on another Linux distribution), follow these instructions.

If the other computer uses a different operating system, refer to that OS’s documentation on accessing SMB shares.
